For many couples, the wedding day is about more than just the two of them. It’s also a chance to honour their families and their cultural heritage. If you’re looking for a way to incorporate a cultural tradition into your wedding day, you may want to consider having a tea ceremony before your reception. Betty Lo, of Special Moments Celebrant, has had the opportunity to help couples with their tea ceremonies, and she’s sharing a few tips on what you need to know if you’re interested in doing one.

One of the things Betty says you need to be aware of is the order in which the relatives will be served. “The tea preparation has to be done the right way, with a blessing (bringing good fortune and luck),” she explains. “Once you call up the next set of relatives, they will sit down and tell the couples to serve your auntie and uncle. When they are serving their relatives there will be a lot of things happening.” Betty recommends having someone there to help guide you through the process so that everything runs smoothly.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that tea ceremonies can take a while—sometimes up to an hour or more. So, if you’re thinking about having one before your reception, make sure you leave enough time in your schedule. You don’t want your guests waiting around for you to arrive at the reception!

A tea ceremony is a wonderful way to honor your family and your culture on your wedding day. Just be sure to do your research ahead of time and leave enough time in your schedule so that everything runs smoothly.
